White, raw milk cheese made in Meaux, France. Brie belongs to the so-called 'soft' dairy product group, along with such cheeses as Camembert and Herve cheese. The original 'Brie' cheeses, Brie de Meaux and Brie de Melun, come from the department of Seine-et-Marne in the Île-de-France region. Both are protected, but there are still many imitations. The Brie de Meaux and Brie de Melun are the only two brie varieties that also have an AOC label, an ‘appelation d'origine controlée’, which means that it is strictly regulated.
